Academy 2
With Coach Timothy Hastie
(Four Sessions / 4:30 Hours / £40 Per Month)
Swimmers at this level will be competing at level 3 or level 2 swim meets, with a good understanding of all of the skills and techniques required to be a competitive swimmer. The main focus will be on skill development, although the use of basic training sets will increase
In Academy 1 swimmers should already have a basic understanding of all 4 strokes and be able to practice competitive turns consistently.
The main focus of this squad is the continued development of great skills, technique and body position while introducing the swimmers to the basic concept of training.
Swimmers in Academy 2 will:
- Continue to develop competitive skills such as starts, turns and finishes at race pace on all four competitive strokes
- Continue to develop underwater skills, especially an effective dolphin leg kick
- Continue to develop legal skill movements on all four competitive strokes
- Continue to develop a wider range of basic drill movements on all four strokes
- Be able to perform competitive relay takeovers at race pace
- Improve leg action on all four strokes
- Be able to use the clock effectively during training sets
- Build on their aerobic capacity whilst holding great skills and technique as directed by the
coach
- Work towards passing Club Awards 3 & 4
Criteria to move into Competitive 1:
- Swimmers must commit to attend regular training sessions
- Swimmers must be qualifying for, and competing at, level 2 and 3 swim meets
- Swimmers must be able to maintain the skills set for Academy 1 (see skills list)
- Be able to perform 2 different stroke drills efficiently for all four competitive strokes, to a high standard
- Be able to perform a competitive start, to a progressive standard with the use of a
competitive underwater phase
- Be able to perform a legal backstroke start to a progressive standard with the use of a
competitive underwater phase
- Be able to consistently perform legal competitive turns with the appropriate underwater
- Pass Club Awards 3 & 4
Academy 2 Skill List:
- Be able to perform a relay takeover at race pace
- Be able to perform a series of basic dry land exercises and activities before every training session.
- Be able to perform fast, competitive kicks on various strokes over a 600m set without stand up up in between for rest.
